ACTS Welcomes Ashraf Gerges

Join us in welcoming Ashraf Gerges to ACTS!

Ashraf Gerges graduated from The Institute of Coptic Studies, completing advanced studies in Coptic iconography. In 1990 he obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Coptic Iconography, specializing in The Meaning and Theology of Coptic Iconography.

This Spring semester, Ashraf Gerges, from SAC, will be teaching ACTS 3083 INTRODUCTION TO ORTHODOX ICONOGRAPHY. This elective-course will introduce students to the contemporary Coptic canon established by the late renowned iconographer, Dr. Isaac Fanous, and will cover basic studio practice, aspects of theory, history, and symbolism. Ashraf was chosen to assist Dr. Isaac Fanous— at the time, head of the Coptic Art Department— teach Coptic Iconography at the Institute of Coptic Studies. 

Ashraf’s work has been exhibited worldwide. Over sixty churches around the world have been decorated with icons and murals created by him, including the churches in our Diocese of Los Angeles such as St. Marina in Irvine, St. Maurice in Pomona, St. Athanasius at the valley. He has also received the Silver Medal from The Orthodox Culture Centre in Venice, Italy for his achievements in the field of Orthodox studies.
